Planning a wedding locally can be stressful enough—imagine planning one long distance! While it seems like a lot to handle, it is definitely possible and brides from all over do it everyday. I have worked with a few brides in my experience that are in this particular situation. Several brides find themselves in a situation where they have moved to a new state and established a career, but they want to come home to get married. Who could resist a wedding in the South?
Distance puts brides in an uncomfortable position because they feel like they can't be hands-on with the wedding professionals that are helping her build her dream wedding. I worked with one bride who I never met...not even on the day of the wedding. Another bride I only met in person four days before her wedding. How is that possible?
Technology.
We are blessed to live in a time where we are able to connect with people so easily. Thanks to several phone calls, emails, Skype sessions and FaceTime calls; the bride who I never had the pleasure of meeting in person got the day she had always dreamed of.
While planning a wedding from a different city, state or region may be stressful, it is definitely possible. The only real difference between a local bride and a long-distance bride is—in fact—the geographical location. There are plenty of ways to ensure that your wedding day will still be perfect for you and your groom from afar. Here are a few tips for planning your wedding long distance:
1. Pinterest is your friend.
Like we need another reason to love Pinterest! One of the first things I do with each bride I work with is ask them to send me the link to their Pinterest board. Looking at Pinterest boards helps me to see your inspiration and get a feel for the style you want for your wedding. This also lets wedding professionals like myself see what's important to you so they can mold those things into your budget.
2. Let technology bridge the gap.
I've had several brides who have not been able to come to consultations in our studio, just like the bride I mentioned before. Fortunately, working in the wedding industry allows you to develop ways to get creative. Mothers or other local relatives come to consultations and FaceTime the bride so she can participate. This is a great way for me to show a bride exactly what I've described to her, and helps me see their reactions to things so I can tell what matters most to them. Even though we aren't meeting in person, having some form of face-to-face dialogue really helps the process and provides comfort to the bride. It's also a great way to make your family feel like they can still help with planning as well!
3. Breathe.
It's important to remember that at the end of the day, you'll be married. Planning is stressful, but don't get discouraged by the little details and trust that everything will be just as perfect as a bride who plans her wedding locally. Look forward to your special day and being surrounded by the people you love. Even though you may be planning a wedding from across the country, it doesn't have to feel that way. Find wedding professionals who put you at ease and you trust will make your day personal and exactly what you envisioned—no matter the distance.
